DAY 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Sherpa Adventure will greet you and assist with your private transfer to the hotel in Kathmandu.

After checking in, you can spend the remainder of the day resting and recovering from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a relaxed walk through the nearby streets, explore local cafés, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of Nepal’s vibrant capital.

In the evening, you will meet your trekking guide for a detailed pre-trek briefing. The guide will introduce the journey to Saipal Base Camp, review the route and expected conditions, check your trekking equipment, and answer any questions. This is also an opportunity to make preparations before travelling into the remote landscapes of western Nepal.

DAY 2

Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

After breakfast, begin a guided exploration of Kathmandu’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks. The day starts at Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the historic heart of the city. Walk through its courtyards and temple-lined squares while discovering the artistic traditions, royal history and living heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.

Continue to Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple. Set on a hill overlooking the valley, this ancient Buddhist sanctuary offers panoramic views of Kathmandu. Prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels, shrines and the watchful eyes of the Buddha create a deeply atmospheric introduction to Nepal’s spiritual culture.

Later, visit Thamel, Kathmandu’s lively tourism district, to purchase or rent any remaining trekking clothing and equipment. Your guide will help you select suitable gear for the remote terrain and changing weather conditions of the Saipal region.

In the evening, travel to Pashupatinath Temple to witness the sacred Aarati ceremony on the banks of the Bagmati River. Accompanied by chanting, bells, lamps and devotional music, this powerful Hindu ritual offers a memorable conclusion to the day.

Return to the hotel for a final equipment check and preparation for the journey into western Nepal.

DAY 3

Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Simikot (2,900 m)

After an early breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu Airport for the flight to Nepalgunj, a lively city in Nepal’s western Terai region. The flight offers a striking transition from the Kathmandu Valley to the subtropical plains near the Indian border.

From Nepalgunj, continue by mountain flight to Simikot, the administrative centre of Humla and the principal gateway to the remote landscapes of Upper Humla. Weather permitting, this scenic flight reveals dramatic views of deep valleys, isolated settlements and the Himalayan ranges of northwestern Nepal.

Upon arrival at Simikot Airport, meet the local trekking team and transfer to your lodge. The remainder of the afternoon is reserved for rest and gentle acclimatization. You may explore the mountain town, walk through its traditional stone-built neighbourhoods and observe everyday life in one of Nepal’s most geographically isolated regions.

DAY 4

Trek from Simikot to Dharapuri (2,357 m)

The route initially follows a mixture of gradual ascents and scenic traverses before beginning a longer descent towards the river valley. Along the way, enjoy views of forested slopes, scattered settlements and the rugged landscapes that define the remote Humla region. The trail provides an opportunity to observe rural life as local people tend their fields, care for livestock and travel between isolated communities.

After approximately five to six hours of walking, arrive at Dharapuri, a peaceful settlement situated beside the river. On arrival, settle into the tented camp and enjoy time to rest while the trekking crew prepares the evening meal. The sound of the river and the surrounding mountain scenery create a tranquil setting for the first night on the trail.

Today’s shorter walking schedule allows for a relaxed pace and time to appreciate the traditional way of life in this remote region. After approximately four hours of trekking, arrive at Kermi, a picturesque village known for its fertile fields and natural hot springs.

After settling into camp, visit the nearby hot springs and enjoy a restorative soak surrounded by mountain scenery. The warm mineral water provides a welcome opportunity to relax tired muscles before returning to camp for dinner.

DAY 6

Trek from Kermi to Yalbang (3,060 m)

After breakfast, leave Kermi and continue along the historic mountain trails that have connected the remote communities of Humla for generations. The route follows sections of the Karnali River, passing through pine forests, rocky valleys and small settlements influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture.

Today’s trek is longer and more demanding, with several gradual ascents and descents through increasingly rugged terrain. Suspension bridges provide access across the river and its tributaries, while the changing landscape offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains.

After approximately seven to eight hours of trekking, reach Yalbang, a traditional Buddhist village known for its strong Tibetan cultural heritage. Visit Namkha Khyung Dzong Monastery, one of the most important monasteries in the region. Its prayer halls, murals, statues and resident monastic community provide a meaningful introduction to the spiritual traditions of Upper Humla.

Following the monastery visit, continue to the riverside campsite. Settle into the tented camp, rest and enjoy dinner surrounded by the quiet mountain landscape.

Accommodation: Tented camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 7

Trek to Chala via Syakup Lagna Pass (4,214 m)

Begin early with breakfast at camp before setting out on one of the trek’s most demanding and rewarding stages. The trail climbs steadily away from Yalbang, passing through forested slopes before entering a more open alpine landscape.

Continue across high-altitude meadows and increasingly rugged terrain towards Syakup Lagna Pass, situated at 4,214 metres. The ascent requires a measured pace as the elevation increases, with regular stops for rest and hydration. From the pass, weather permitting, enjoy spectacular views of Saipal Himal and the remote mountain ranges of northwestern Nepal.

After taking time to appreciate the panorama, begin the descent towards Chala. The trail crosses exposed alpine terrain before gradually returning to gentler landscapes near the village. After approximately eight to nine hours of trekking, arrive at Chala, a traditional mountain settlement where daily life remains closely connected to agriculture, livestock and the surrounding environment.

Settle into the tented camp and enjoy a well-earned rest after this long day across the pass.

DAY 8

Trek from Chala to Thulo Kharka (4,100 m)

After breakfast, leave Chala and continue deeper into the remote alpine landscapes beneath the Saipal range. The trail traverses open slopes, rugged valleys and seasonal grazing grounds used by local herders during the warmer months.

As the route gains altitude, cultivated land gradually disappears and the scenery becomes increasingly wild and expansive. Depending on the season, the high pastures may be dotted with alpine flowers, grazing livestock and temporary herders’ shelters. Throughout the day, the surrounding ridgelines and snow-covered summits offer a powerful sense of isolation.

After approximately six to seven hours of trekking, arrive at Thulo Kharka, an extensive area of high-altitude pastureland situated at approximately 4,100 metres. Settle into the campsite and spend the remainder of the day resting and acclimatizing.

As evening approaches, enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the alpine wilderness and changing light across the Saipal range before dinner at camp.

Continue towards the glacier-fed lake, whose clear waters reflect the surrounding ridges and snow-covered peaks in favourable weather. During the flowering season, colourful alpine plants add contrast to the rugged landscape.

As you move away from Saipal East Base Camp, the landscape gradually changes, revealing broad mountain valleys and seasonal grazing grounds traditionally used by local herders. With few settlements or signs of modern development along the route, this section offers an authentic experience of Nepal’s remote western wilderness.

After approximately six to seven hours of trekking, arrive at Dhaule Kharka. Settle into the peaceful campsite and spend the evening resting while enjoying the mountain views and quiet atmosphere.

DAY 16

This flexibility is important when travelling in remote regions, where flight schedules depend heavily on visibility and local weather conditions.

If the reserve day is not required for travel arrangements, enjoy it at leisure in Pokhara or Kathmandu, depending on the final flight schedule. In Pokhara, you may relax beside Phewa Lake, explore Lakeside or enjoy additional wellness treatments. If you are already in Kathmandu, you may explore local markets, visit additional cultural sites or simply rest at the hotel.

Proceed to the nearby World Peace Pagoda, a prominent Buddhist monument set above the lake. Take time to explore the peaceful grounds and appreciate the expansive views before returning to the city.
