Enquiry NowThis journey crosses the whole Tibetan plateau, from the temples of Lhasa to the north face of Everest and on to sacred Mount Kailash in the far west. It is one of the most complete ways to experience Tibet, and it begins in Chengdu, a convenient gateway for travelers flying in from Asia, Europe and beyond.
You start with a day among Chengdu's giant pandas and the colossal Leshan Buddha, then fly up to Lhasa. Three days in the Tibetan capital let you explore the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple and the pilgrim circuit of the Barkhor while your body adjusts to the altitude. From there, the road leads west past the turquoise waters of Yamdrok Lake to Gyantse and Shigatse, and on to Rongbuk for sunrise on the north face of Everest.
The heart of the journey is Mount Kailash (6,638 m), revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bön followers. After watching first light fall across Lake Mansarovar, you walk the sacred 52 km kora around the mountain, crossing the Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m. The return journey takes you through the ancient monastery town of Sakya and back to Lhasa.
