New Government Guidelines for Trekking in Nepal's Restricted Regions

New Government Guidelines for Trekking in Nepal's Restricted Regions
Posted Date: 18 Jun 2026Author Sherpa Adventure
Nepal's Department of Immigration has introduced new regulations for trekking in the country's restricted areas. These updated guidelines simplify the permit application process, strengthen trekker safety measures, and ensure better management of Nepal's remote and culturally significant regions. Sherpa Adventure Travel is here to help you understand these changes and arrange all necessary permits for a smooth and hassle-free trekking experience.

Updated Permit System for Restricted Area Treks

According to the latest government directive, all foreign nationals planning to trek in Nepal's 13 designated restricted areas must obtain the necessary trekking permits through the Department of Immigration. To improve efficiency, the permit application process has been digitized, allowing registered trekking agencies to process applications online.

Trekkers can also seek assistance through the Department of Immigration's dedicated permit support helpline: +977-9761423636.

Solo Trekking Permits No Longer Available

A significant change introduced by the new regulation is the discontinuation of solo trekking permits for restricted areas. Foreign trekkers are now required to arrange their permits through a licensed trekking agency and travel with a certified guide. This policy has been implemented to improve visitor safety, support Nepal's tourism industry, and ensure better management of remote and environmentally sensitive regions.

Key Regulations

Under the new guidelines:
  • All restricted area trekking permits must be processed through a registered trekking agency.
  • Every trekking group must be accompanied by a government-licensed trekking guide.
  • Trekking agencies are responsible for coordinating emergency rescue services if required.
  • One licensed guide can accompany a maximum of seven trekkers.
  • Foreign visitors can use their Nepal visa application ID when applying for trekking permits.

Why These Changes Matter

The updated regulations are designed to:
  • Enhance the safety and security of trekkers.
  • Create employment opportunities for licensed Nepali guides.
  • Protect Nepal's culturally and environmentally sensitive restricted regions.
  • Improve the overall trekking experience through better organization and support.
